The Olympic whitewater course in Athens is under construction development to become a whitewater park. Plans are that the course will stay as it is, with potential to host races or training events, but it will also be available to public and to us, weekend warriors, for kayaking or rafting. Read more

Upper Evinos - 3 April 06. . Evinos is a special river for us - the river where most of us learned how to paddle, a river that we feel like home - a river that we enjoy coming back again and again, every year. Even though we keep coming back so often, we had never decided to make the extra travel to reach the upper part of the river, over the dam and the lake that collects the clear water to send it home to Athens. Selinountas river - 9 April 06. After many weeks of high flows, that followed this year's early and fast snow melting, Selinountas reached the favourable middle level limit in the second week of April. This year, we decided to put in on its east fork, a stream called Maneseiko. More >>>

River data changes - March 2006. During the winter 2005-2006 season there have been a few changes in the river data, described in our pages. Take a look at these notes, about rapid changes in Krikelopotamos, impacts from the new dam construction in Erymanthos and a mew access road in Alfios river. More >>>

Kayak surfing in Vouligmeni (Athens) March 12th. I 've been waiting a long time the chance to try some kayak surfing at Vouliagmeni. The opportunity came last Saturday, when the high south winds formed some descent (in the mediteranean scale) waves. I decided to take my chances as the only kayaker between 25 surfers.  More >>>

Krikelopotamos, March 5th, 2006. Even spring has typicaly arrived, new snow and rain storms make notice that winter hasn't given up yet. In a tiny break of the bad weather, we 've been to Evritania, to paddle one of the most beautiful rivers in Greece, Krikelopotamos. Even if some of us hadn't paddle difficult stuff for some time, the team stood strong and ran the 20+ kms of magical class 3-4 remote gorges, with fewer problems than expected.

River Friends. TEAMadara, introduces River Friends. A web based observation post, monitoring all river threats, trying to show the beautiful image of the still virgin, river environment and promote a more gentle development. We host news and articles about river pollution, dam threats and general river environmental issues. Find out more about Greek River Friends and help us save some rivers from the "death list"

Slalom Course: Many of you ask about the new slalom course in Athens, whether is operational and available to the public. Unfortunately, for the time being is not. The whole area will be developed into a recreational park and the whole project is in the evaluation phase right now. Hopefully, in the next months the design will be finalized and we will know whether the course will be available for recreational paddling and in what terms.

River Action: Except from a couple of big water runs in the fall and early winter, it's been a slow "off-season" Want to know more about it?

  • November - December 05: Big Water action in Erymanthos and Fidakia
  • January 06: TEAMadara's ski week in Wengen Switzerland
  • February 06: Erymanthos again

October 2nd 2005. The first "extreme" kayak race in a Greek river, an event that it was a dream for our whitewater community, came true, last weekend. A dream that brought together most Greek "class 4" paddlers – there are not a lot as you may guess – to run one of the most radical creeks in Greece: Upper Lousios river in Peloponnesos.

September 1st. The word is out! An invitation to all active paddlers has been published at TEAMadara website, to compete in the first Greek race ever, in a real class 3-4 river. Most of our usual visitors thought it was a joke. A few of them, hoped that it was one.

Distratiotis – Aoos. June 5th – 6th 2005.
After almost 2 months of continuous high flow, Aoos finally gave us a break,  falling to a level that would favor, a powerful but safe run, of both the upper and lower gorges. Despite the weather report, forecasting stormy afternoons, 4 of us decided to make the long trip from Athens and see for ourselves, whether the King of the Greek rivers, would have any guests.
We put in at Distratiotis, the right tributary from Distrato village, a nice 3kms long, class 3 (4-) run, featuring a small but friendly gorge, until its confluence to Aoos, 7kms below Vovousa. Aoos itself was worth of the long trip, offering, besides the magnificent scenery, great and plenty of class 3, 4 rapids, followed by the classic reviving pools.  More in our May Trip report.

May 10th 2005. Easter week in Pindos. Last week we had the chance to paddle some of the beautiful rivers of Pindus range, like Meleopotamos and its recently explored tributary: Aspropotamos or Perivoliotis. Then there were the crystal clear fountains of Voidomatis and the north western torrent of Sarandaporos: Kerasovitikos, that kept us around the Aoos area, that still running high by the way.

It was our pleasure to finally meet Wilko and his group of Czech paddlers, paddling Meleopotamos together, Miha and the Slovenian paddlers that had just returned from a crazy run of Upper Aoos and finally the "lone wolf"of Greek whitewaters, the pioneer Franz Bettinger, who hasn't give up exploring those southern waters!

Selinountas, was one of our goals for "new"rivers this season. Rarely run, its remote gorge in north Peloponessos area, was known to bear difficulties around class 4. At April 11th, we decided to find out for ourselves. Our opinion:

Long, intense and demanding river, for teams with experience at class 4 and tight gorges. The last 5 kms of the river is a class 3 joyful run. River Data and Map available.

Hit the slopes.

It was supposed to be a relaxing weekend for two, at Neni's favourite ski resort, until Konidis and Kourlas decided that we would be bored and they should join us. Like an avalanche triggered, more and more were added, to form a group of nine, blowing out every chance of relaxation.
Thankfully, Ziakas realized, that if he would close his pharmacy, for more than three days, many of his oldest and most devoted customers, will either freeze to death, waiting outside to his return, or they will end up going his competitor, down the block, to find out that all this time, he was the most expensive in the neighborhood. So, with Mary and Alfredo, they didn't join us, until the end of the week. More >>>

11.03.05 Krikelopotamos river

Sunshine and perfect water levels was our reward for traveling to Karpenisi area this weekend.
After many weeks of snowing and cold temperatures, rain and south winds melted a lot of snow in Kaliakouda, Chelidona and Tymfristos mountains, resulting in extra high water levels in the beginning of the week. By Saturday the flow had settled to an almost perfect level (medium to high ) so the lucky six of us who decided to put in at Krikelo - Domnista bridge had a really joyful run. More >>>

27 Feb 05. "Big Water" Mornos

Rain was falling as we were approaching the mountains and if we were not anxious whether that would spoil the river; we would have much appreciated the big beautiful rainbow. The rain got harder as we reached the village of Stromi and the waterfall beside the road was roaring big and brown – the color of the flood!  More >>>

19 Feb 05. Mornos
Snow had melted at the elevated pass of Pavliani – so the weather man said - so we took our chances to Mornos. Snow may had melt the last few days but some more snow was falling while we were on our way up. Spyros was grinning for its worn out tyres and the funky 4x4 of its SUV, that has its own mind when it comes to decide whether it will engage or not. More >>>

Lower Erymanthos
It was the third time in a row that I was trying to reach Erymanthos gauge keeper at the phone. At the end, the news was that the flow was super high for us mortal paddlers, so we decided to go for the lower section, which none of us had run yet. More >>>
