River action in 2006

2nd annual Upper Lousios Race. November 19th 2006. Last weekend, TEAMadara and friends, got together for the 2nd annual river race of Upper Lousios. Even some of last year's "key" players were not able to attend - one of them managed to escape in South America (this is what we call "running scared") - we kept our engagement and entered the race. May 06. Easter paddling in Pindos. Our best photos from a great trip.

April 03. Upper Evinos. Evinos is a special river for us - the river where most of us learned how to paddle, a river that we feel like home - a river that we enjoy coming back again and again, every year. Even though we keep coming back so often, we had never decided to make the extra travel to reach the upper part of the river, over the dam and the lake that collects the clear water to send it home to Athens. April 09. Selinountas river. After many weeks of high flows, that followed this year's early and fast snow melting, Selinountas reached the favourable middle level limit in the second week of April. This year, we decided to put in on its east fork, a stream called Maneseiko. More >>>

March 06. Kayak surfing in Athens. I 've been waiting a long time the chance to try some kayak surfing in Vouliagmeni. The opportunity came last Saturday, when the high south winds formed some decent (in the mediteranean scale) waves. I decided to take my chances as the only kayaker between 25 surfers...   More >>>

Krikelopotamos. Even if spring had typicaly arrived, new snow and rain storms make it clear, that winter hasn't given up yet. In a tiny break of the bad weather, we 've traveled to Evritania, to paddle one of the most beautiful rivers there.

December 05. Fidakia roller coaster.

"A little swim every now and then is good for the soul" as Corran Addison once said and for a few of us at TEAMadara, who thought that Fidakia river, in a pre-flood stage, would be a scroll in the park. More >>>

October 05. The first real river race in Greece.

The first "extreme" kayak race in a Greek river, an event that it was a dream for our whitewater community, a dream that finally came true, last weekend. A dream that brought together most Greek "class 4" paddlers – there are not a lot as you may guess – to run one of the most radical creeks in Greece: Upper Lousios river. More >>>

June 05. Aoos.

After almost 2 months of continuous high flow, Aoos finally gave us a break, falling to a level that would favor, a powerful but safe run, of both the upper and lower gorges. Despite the weather report, forecasting stormy afternoons, 4 of us decided to make the long trip from Athens and see for ourselves, whether the King of the Greek rivers, would... More >>>

May 05. Erymanthos, Aspropotamos, Aliakmonas.

Since the beginning of the dam works, the famous "Red Gorge" of Aliakmon seemed like a problematic destination that would not worth the visit. We were given permission to enter the worksite, at Agios Ilarionas, quite easily, as it was Sunday and there were no major works in progress. More >>>

April 05. The spring water madness. Spring paddling season is coming to an end, leaving us with lots of new rivers and new friends. Amongst the highlights of the season I would place the first "Greek" descent of Selinountas gorge on April 11th and of Aspropotamos or Perivoliotis river, the northern tributary of Meleopotamos on May 4th. Both rivers were at the class III-IV range of difficulty, which will become classic in the next years. More >>>

March 05. Krikelopotamos, Karpenisiotis. Most of us had joined Krikelopotamos epic run back at 2002, that resulted in the loss of a boat, a solo run of the difficult gorge, a cold bivouac and a marathon walk out for the part of us that stayed back. This time, with two years of experience in our baggage and keen to throw away the demons of the past, the whole team was back, ready to face the river in a serious water level. More >>>
